Why Sunscreen Can Appear Patchy on Darker Skin Tones

As a 24-year-old Black woman with a cool undertone, I’ve experienced my share of sunscreen struggles. It can be really frustrating to apply a product that leaves your skin looking patchy, especially when all you want is to protect your skin while maintaining that natural glow. So, is it common for sunscreen to appear uneven on darker skin? The situation is a bit complex.

One reason for this patchiness is the ingredients in many sunscreens. Products containing physical blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide can sometimes leave a white cast on deeper skin tones. This issue can worsen if the sunscreen is not blended well or if it’s applied too heavily, leading to those uneven patches we all want to avoid.

Another aspect to keep in mind is how you layer your skincare products. If you’re using toners or other products underneath your sunscreen, they can affect how the sunscreen sits on your skin. It’s essential to allow each layer to dry completely before moving on to the next to achieve a more seamless finish.

I’m curious to hear about your experiences! What sunscreens have you found that don’t leave that ashy look? Do you have any tips or tricks that work well for applying sunscreen on deeper skin tones?
