As a night-shift nurse, I often wake up to find my eyes looking red and irritated, and I know I’m not alone in this experience. There are several reasons this might occur, especially after a long night of work or insufficient sleep. One common cause is dryness, which can happen if you sleep with your eyes partially open or in a dry environment. This can be worsened by dehydrated skin, making your eyes appear even more irritated in the morning.
Allergies are another factor to consider. Dust, pollen, or pet dander in your sleeping area can lead to redness and inflammation. If you’ve recently changed your sleeping environment or if the seasons are shifting, this could be the reason behind your red eyes. Additionally, spending too much time staring at screens can cause eye strain, contributing to discomfort and redness.
To help alleviate this issue, using a humidifier in your bedroom can add moisture to the air, which may help. Staying well-hydrated and using eye drops for dryness can also be effective. If red eyes persist or if you experience pain, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional.
