What You Need to Know About Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Hi everyone! Recently, I’ve been exploring the ins and outs of skincare, and I’ve come across the term post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, often shortened to PIH. It may sound complicated, but it simply refers to those dark spots that can appear on our skin after a breakout or any type of injury. For those of us with oily skin, these marks can be particularly annoying reminders of past blemishes.

So, how does PIH develop? When our skin experiences inflammation—like after popping a pimple or dealing with a rash—there’s often an increase in melanin production in that area. This can result in darker patches that may take weeks or even months to fade. I’ve noticed some spots after my T-zone breakouts, which has made me eager to learn how to prevent them from getting worse.

I’ve read that incorporating ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, and wearing sunscreen can be effective in lightening these spots. Additionally, being gentle with our skin and steering clear of harsh scrubs can help reduce irritation. I’m looking to adjust my routine to minimize PIH in the future, and I’d love to hear from others who have faced this issue! What strategies have worked for you in managing or preventing PIH? Are there any go-to products or routines that you recommend?
